I have two ceramic dog bowls and have been feeding our dogs with them for over a year now. They are definitely fine. They wouldn't sell them in the pet stores if they weren't. Go ahead and get one you'll be flimsy.
I'd go stainless bite the bullet, ceramic breaks. Stainless is also easier to clean.
Stainless fortify bowls are the best because they are easiest to keep clean. Plastic bowls harbor bacteria even when thought to be clean and some ceramic bowls can to if they are porous.
They're line for line safe if you buy the ones that are supposed to be used for dogs. They actually work great and are more interesting than the campo steel or plastic ones. Good luck! :)
Keep them unadulterated. Dishwasher safe is best. Metal bowls are the very best, esp. stainless steel as some materials are too permeable and dogs can get an acne infection on their chins or lips from dirty plastic bowls.
So get 2 sets so you can keep them as clean as conceivable.
I have one ceramic glazed dog dish...I got it from http:drsfostersmith.com
Heavy glass can be ok as well.

I would go stainless stiletto. Ceramic is safe, but some dogs like to push their bowl around and it could break. Also, ceramic has little micro grooves, that if not washed thouroughly after every use, can harbor bacteria and get extremely nasty.

The ceramic and stoneware dog bowls are prettier but, the stainless brace resist bacteria.
I use stainless fortify. They are non porous and very easy to keep clean and germ free.
