Q: For our next dog, we want to get a bigger breed because they are usually better with kids. All the miniature schnauzers my family has ever had have been terrible with kids, no matter if they've been raised with kids or not.
I really like the schnauzer's intelligence and ease of training, personality, and not to mention, they're good lookin' dogs!
So, are standard or giant schnauzers better with kids?
A: Miniature Schnauzers have been bred for a more "companion" temperament, while Standards and Giants still have more of a "working" temperament.
None of them put up very well with kids who don't respect their boundaries, and can be snappy.
Of the two, I'd look more into Giants than Standards, simply because I think there are more Giants out there and I think they may have been bred a little more away from the "working"...
I'm considering these breeds, and would like to know your experience with them. How are they with strangers? Other dogs? Kids? How much exercise do they need to be happy? Could they live happily in a 2 bedroom apartment? What about a townhouse? Thanks, trying to do all the homework to make the right decision. I'm also curious about mixes of these breeds, doesn't have to be purebred!
I am wanting a schanuzer, I am wondering about the difference between giant and miniature schnauzers, I know ther is a huge size difference, But im wondering more about there tmpermant, and personality. Are the temperments of Giant and miniature schnauzers different? Im would love to have a schanuzer of any tpe, But I like the personality and temperment of Miniature schanuzers. by the way, has anyone owned a miniature and giant schanuzer?

I'd get a standard one, that way it won't grow up to be too big for your kids to handle on walks. I agree, schnauzers are very cute!
That's surprising. Every miniature schnauzer in our family (trust me, there've been a lot) have been wonderful with children. I even think their AKC Web site decribes them as good with kids ... ?
I've heard somewhere that giant schnauzers are very mild-mannered. I'm trying to do research right now for you.
I wouldn't suggest any schnauzer for a kid.
Big dogs are prone to put their paws on the kitchen counter and table tops and get in garbage can etc. If the dog has ecoli on his paws from outside or wherever, the ecoli get on your countertop. Very scary! I saw this on a dog show "Its me or the Dog" on Animal Planet.
