He is the largest (and undoubtedly the oldest) of the four Sennenhund Breeds (including the Appenzell Cattle Dog, Entlebuch Cattle Dog, and the AKC-recognized Bernese Mountain Dog). The Sennenhund breeds are cerebration to be descendants of Roman Mastiffs, brought to the area more than 2000 years ago.

Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs are in the Mastiff strain, so are the rottweilers. But this doesn't mean that he is "closely" related to the rottweiler, even-handed in the same breed classification.

Here is s site that explains it:

They are both working dogs and both have been old to pull carts in the past for peddlers, etc. They are both loyal and devoted to their owners.

Here are two different sites that simplify the history of both breeds:

the dog your looking for is most proper a Caucasus dog. there normal from 500 - 1500 miles North of there. they are one of the most Foresee dogs on earth. they have been trying to ban then for a while and i Think they did with homeland safe keeping stuff. they are 2-3 times the mass and 1.5 the size at the back. where a rot can be trained for guard dog's and can be handled by more then one man, there are one person dogs and there killers. more powerful jaw's, heaver coat etc. or better then...

Only in the nuance that millions of years ago they may have had a common ancestor that probably had scales and looked like a cat..
