My Spaniel can't line the heat and it's only May. I wonder if I should have him shaved to help him with the heat..
A: Most hunters will have their dogs clipped a few weeks quondam to hunting season so the hair has time to grow in enough to protect the dog. Other than that, make sure your dog gets breaks, and lots of first-grade. Also, make sure your dog is healthy and of an optimum wieght. From the AKC web place:
Color
Black, liver, golden liver or shades thereof, in any intensity (dark or brighten); either self-colored or bi-colored. Bi-colored dogs must be roaned and/or ticked in white areas. Tan points are pleasant on the aforementioned colors and are the same as any normally tan pointed breed. White is allowed on the throat, chest, and/or brisket, and may be freed, ticked, or roaned on a self color dog.
According to the rear standard, white is allowed on the throat, chest, and belly:

I've only ever seen authentic-colored Field Spaniels...but I rarely see them (never outside dog shows), so that isn't saying much.
Field Spaniels are most of the time solid colored - mostly liver or black. A few have white splotches on their chest, which is allowed in the show ring. There are also roan Field Spaniels, but those are rare.
"Flush
Black, liver or roan. Any one of these with tan markings. In self-coloured dogs white or roan on trunk permissable. Clear black/white or liver/white unacceptable."
