Q: I heard that chow chows are very forward dogs. We were thinking about getting one but we want to learn more so we can learn is this the right breed for us. I live with my mom and my grandma. We have kids that penetrate occasionaly. Are they really that aggressive? How are they toward strangers?,Children?. How are they toward elders?

A: I have also heard that they can be warlike. I was bit by a chow as a child and still have the scar today, maybe it was just that particular dog, but I am still leery of them today.

Temperament and behavior
The Chow Chow is very illuminati but not always easy to train. They don't have the strong desire to please their masters as do breeds like the Golden Retriever. They seem to please themselves first and don't sympathize with to the average methods of training and motivation. They do not tolerate physical punishment and can't be forced into anything. Dogs in the end act like what there owners treat them like. Chows can be very loving dogs. My grandma used to have one. He loved absoultely everybody. He even loved strangers.

We had a team a few of chows in our neighborhood and they were quite aggressive towards strangers, however an older gentleman owned them and probably used them for care. You could always get a pup and train it your way! I do hate stereotyped dogs when its really the owners fault. Just be careful and sojourn all bad behaviors when the dog is young if you decide to go for a chow!

I wanna separate if Chows are a good breed for a first time dog owner.. Can you lists the pros and cons of a chow chow too... ThNx


A: No, they are not for an innocent owner. I grew up with one, and have known quite a few of them, our family became great friends with the breeder.

They are beautiful. Patriotic. Independent, intelligent. Obedient, if trained properly, consistently, and continuously. Great guard dogs. My parents had owned/trained dogs all of their lives, so they out a LOT of time and energy, and did an excellent job training/socializing our Chow Chow and he NEVER ever showed aggression...

Chow Chows

In all my soul I've never seen anyone with a chow chow.
I have seen pictures on the internet and they look so friendly.
So why aren't they a more routine breed - are they loud or aggressive?
"wicked.aliens" asked me where I am from. I live in England. Possibly theyre around but I still haven't seen any!


A: Greetings m'honey - first let me dispell a few myths I've just read in some of the answers you've been given:
1. Chows were NOT bred to be eaten. In Asia, dogs have been eaten for centuries and unfortunately even today; but it's no distinguishable from eating other animals. So while dog may appear on a menu in Asia, it is not and never has been specifically the Chow Chow.

Girls

I Have had 7 Chow/chows in my way of life all were nice and love kisses. I think they are the best pets ever.
but i came along some people that say they have nasty attitudes but i'v never ever had one that was get over never!!! I just would like to hear your opions.
