Q: I have been doing lots of reading on Italian greyhounds and I have decipher (for the most part) that they are very trainable, but also that they love to be up on furnature etc. Arent these traits contradictory? If you have or have had an IG, please give me your thoughts. Are they trainable? Could one be trained to bide off the furnature? I realize that they are creatures of comfort but if I bought it a doggy bed, would that suffice? Thanks for any feedback!
A: Italian Greyhounds are very dependant on their humans, being mignonne and very short haired they get cold easily.
They can be trained, gently and consistantly, not to get on the furniture.
That said, they are a scene hound, even though they are in the toy group, and, sighthounds have minds of their own! There is a reason they call them 30 mph couch potatoes!
A lot of times they will out assume you! Like getting on the furniture when you are not in the room. Any one that...

I had an IG. He was immense and super cute, but they are very needy and very cuddly. I believe that any dog is trainable, however. You should be able to train a puppy to guy off the couch! Using a dog bed and creating some space that the puppy would know is theirs would help. It would be important to never let the puppy up on the stuff. I would go for it, just keep a firm hand and don't let them up sometimes and it should be easy.
I "babysit" an Italian Greyhound, and she is one spoiled hardly girl! But I love her, and she is easily trained. Her "parents" let her sit or lie down anywhere she wants to, but at our house my quiet's chair is off-limits. It only took a time or two of simply setting her off the chair, telling her no, and providing her an substitute place to sit, and she stopped trying altogether. Granted, if we left her alone in the house I wouldn't recall for certain if she...

Well, my thoughts are... if you don't be a dog on the furniture, don't get an Italian Greyhound! They live to be near you at all times. Not only near you, but on you. They are not the dog to get if you want an independent dog.
IGs suffer from what I call "tipsy parrot on the tree syndrome". They want to be up, looking down and surveying their kingdom.
As for trainable, they are, IF you forgive sighthound mentality. You cannot train them...
Of route there trainable! IG's are very smart dogs. If you train them to stay off the furniture, they will. Saying that is just a steriotype against greyhounds. Im persuaded you and me love IG's so just make sure it doesn't go on furniture.
Have lots of fun with your greyhound!!
