How do Newfoundlands rescue people out of water?

Q: I've heard Newfoundlands are deeply to go swimming with because they will try to drag you out of the water. How do they do that? Do they bite you, or nudge, or push? I think it sounds like a uproarious site to see, and I have heard stories of real rescues from Newfoundlands. They sound like amazing animals.

A: The Newfoundland is exceptionally well built for thin out work. He has a water resistant double coat, a strong muscled tail which is used as a rudder, webbed feet, ears that grasp one another close to the head, and a strong swimming style resembling a breast stroke. It is a riot if you ever see a Newfie in manners!!

Is there any information on crossbreeding Newfoundlands and Saint Bernards?

I have skim that monks crossbreed the two sometime back in the 1800s. I also know there is a specific breed now called the Leonberger. However, my dogs look after is a Newfoundland and father is a Saint Bernard. I am looking for current information specific to crossing these two breeds...if the info exists. Thanks!


A: You're not effective to get a Leonberger by crossing a Newfy and a St. Bernard, it takes many generations of careful selective breeding to beget a new breed. You can't get it with one mixed litter.

You also will not get reliable or predictable results. Each pup could inherit difference traits, resulting in a widespread off the mark spectrum of appearance, temperment and health.

You also need to be extremely careful with large breeds that are given...

Any body know anything about Newfoundlands ? I have heard they are wonderful dogs and awesome with kids?

I would turtle-dove the opinion of an unbiased person. Any info good or bad.


A: I've never owned one, but have a also pen-friend who ahs one. As others have said, they are huge dogs. There's one local to me who is a therapy dog for the elderly in nursing homes and is in fact sweet. But, because of their size, I probably would not suggest one with young kids. Accidents can and do happen. My friend's dog plowed into her uninterrupted around a corner and broke her arm. He also ate a hole in the soft top of her jeep...her husband came out to see his head...
