I have a one year old Pekingese who I adopted two months ago. He came from a farmstead and was not housebroken, so when he got to me, I had to start from scratch with his training. The longest he has gone without an accident is a little over a week, but as a rule he pees on my carpet every few days. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with housebreaking a pekingese. How long did it take for the accidents in the quarter to stop? I hear they can be more difficult to train than...
A: My peke took over a year before he was consummately housebroken. Now if he really has to go the bathroom and I'm not home, he will jump in the bathtub and use it. A lot of people think this is uncultured, but considering his other option is to use the carpet, I think it's great. The only way I can figure that he learned this trick was by following me to the bathroom and associating usual bathroom "smells" with his own bodily functions. Two months is a very little amount...

they act fair like any other breed.
Pekingese are unregulated, stubborn and lively. They enjoy the affection of their owners, and give affection in return. They are happy, playful and alert. Pekingese flatter faithful companions, with confidence and charm. They can be fearless when they need to be. Pekingese are suspicious of strangers, but never aggressive toward them. They are not very biddable, and can sometimes get jealous. This is more of a one-person breed.
With Children: Yes, but not suited for young children as...

Pekingese are brazen out, independent, and lively little dogs. They do best around older children and are really social. Pekinese dogs do good watchdogs because of their tendency to bark. This breed can become stubborn when it comes to training, so they may be difficult to housebreak. They lack consistent training like any other dog. They are intelligent, but still require daily training because knowing the basics isn't an intuition.

I had one growing up. She was very unrelenting and independent. As far as training, she did basic tricks, but we didn't push any major training with her. She passed a dependable old age about 7 years ago.
Overall, they are a good breed, but very high maintenance.
