I am planning on getting a dog, but I've never had one before and I don't skilled in the first thing about training. I want to train it so it doesn't end up like my cousin's dog who jumps all over people and barks at everything. I scantiness my dog to be my buddy so please hook me up with some sort of DVD to give me the basics of training my new dog right.

A: Cesar Millan has several videos on being the die leader which is a good place to start. Sign up for obedience classes when you get your puppy, read all you can on your multiply of dog so you know what to expect. There are a ton of books on training i.e. "Dog tricks for Dummies"

Being your dogs pack leader is the first place to start, dogs don't thoughtfulness you if you aren't their leader. giving your dogs rules, boundaries and limitations, not allowing them to do anything...

I currently have my 5 month old in puppy order. I was going to go through all 4 classes at Petsmart, but now I'm thinking I could save about $300.00 and teach my dog the same things (and presumably more), if I invest in a good book or DVD. Any suggestions? I'd prefer a DVD, but books are fine too. That way I can also apply the training to our other two dogs at the same measure.

A: The 'for dummies' series are always okay. But, please ask your vet for listings of other local obedience clubs (surely some are cheaper) & do take your pup to a formal class. The benefits are as much about socializing your pup as is about teaching manners. That is something you can't get with proficient in schooling.

I could live in relative bliss with a dog that knew nothing but how to come when called. I mean the screech-to-a-halt, turn-on-a-dime, zoom-back-to-me-enthusiastically -no-matter-what’s-going-on kind of recall.  A reliable recall is the Holy Grail of dog ownership.

The most obvious reason to teach “come,” a k a The Recall, is for safety.  If Sam is trained to come when called, you just might save his life if he’s about to cross the street in front of oncoming traffic.  Or, you might put a stop to felonious mischief, like chasing kids on bikes, and divert disastrous encounters with the likes of Pepé Le Pew… or a rattlesnake.
