I’ve got to hand it to him. Cesar Millan is backed by an amazing marketing machine. He’s currently on a book tour with his newest book, has a new DVD out, and I’ve even heard there’s a “Dog Whisperer” sitcom in the works based on his show starring “That 70’s Show” alum, Wilder Valderrama. Five years after he broke onto the scene, he’s still going strong.
What’s his secret? Is he really whispering to dogs? Does he really have the secret? Come on, of course he doesn’t. For one, just like dieting or getting rich, there is no secret to training a dog. The bookshelves are filled with dog training books, videos, and television shows with tips. Some work better than others, but there isn’t one way. So what is it about Cesar Millan that has taken the nation by storm? From a broadcasting or entertainment standpoint, he’s definitely good in front of the camera. He’s charismatic and easy to listen to. But I think there’s more to it than that. He’s popular because people think he’s performing miracles before their eyes. He’s popular because people think he’s fixing behavior problems no one else could (e.g. his infamous red zone cases). He’s popular because his show is very well produced and presents him transforming gut growling, biting, reactive, dog/people aggressive dogs into perfect, well adjusted pets within 20 minutes, and that includes commercials! Cesar’s Way plays good on TV. And no matter what face you put on it, real life training using positive, dog-friendly methods, takes time, commitment and patience which just can’t compete with the hype and sensationalism presented on “The Dog Whisperer.”

Hi there,
There are many methods of dog training out there and many videos/DVDs for them.
As a dog trainer, here is what I normally recommend to people.
There are lots of resources available on the web, but also use your local library to check out dvds before you buy. Saves $$$ :-)
For rank beginners I just love clicker training methods. It's all based on positive reward methods, keeping all interactions between you and your dog as you learn...
Retard with Pet Smart or Petco.
Believe it or not they have tapes and also have classes. . . your choice.
